Kyogashi is an art completed by deeply understanding the “story” hidden inside of the confectionery.

Kyoto confectionery, so-called “Kyogashi”, has a unique design,
which corresponds with the place, occasion or the receiver.
These are “Palm-sized nature” crystallized by craftsmanship into
“small sculptures weighing only 50 grams”.
The eater tries to read and understand the “story” hidden inside of the Kyogashi.
Only after receiving the message from the creator, they can enjoy the Kyogashi for the first time.

The exhibition features the selection of Kyogashi confectionery works.

*The "Kyoto Confectionery Culture" was selected as a "Intangible Cultural Heritage Connecting Kyoto" in 2017.

About Koudoukan and
Minagawa Kien

弘道館と皆川淇園について

Yuuhisai Koudoukan is the 'sukiya-zukuri' architectural style built on the site of the 'Yuuhisai Koudoukan', the academic institution of the leading Edo period Confucian scholar, Minagawa Kien (1734-1807). In addition to preserving the building and gardens, we continue to work to reconsider the culture of the Edo period and revive academic institutions in the modern era.

We hope that through the Kyogashi Exhibition, visitors will be able to reflect on the rich network of cultural salons that existed at that time.
